What EMI means

An EMI (equated monthly instalment) is the fixed amount you pay your lender every month until the loan is repaid. Each instalment covers the interest for the month and part of the loan itself. Early instalments are mostly interest; later ones are mostly principal.

How to use the calculator

  1. Set the loan amount.
  2. Set the interest rate a year. Use the rate your lender quotes; rates change with the market.
  3. Set the tenure in years.
  4. Read the monthly payment, the total interest and the total you would repay.

What changes your EMI

A larger loan, a higher rate and a longer tenure each change the payment. A longer tenure lowers the monthly amount but raises the total interest.

The result is indicative and is not a loan offer. Your lender's figures, fees and eligibility rules are the ones that count.
