Tile calculator

Enter the room and the tile size to see how many tiles and boxes to order, with an allowance for cuts and breakage.

Floor area—
Tiles to order—
Boxes to order—

A planning figure for a plain rectangular floor. Layouts with borders, patterns or many corners need more.

How this is worked out

  • Floor area is length x width, converted to square metres.
  • The area of one tile comes from its size in millimetres.
  • The wastage percentage is added before rounding up to whole tiles.
  • Boxes are the tiles needed divided by tiles per box, rounded up.
  • Grout joints are not deducted, so the figure is on the safe side.

What it works out

The calculator divides the floor area by the area of one tile, adds an allowance for cuts and breakage, and rounds up to whole tiles and whole boxes.

How to use it

  1. Enter the room length and width in feet.
  2. Choose the tile size in millimetres.
  3. Set the wastage. Allow about 10% for a straight layout and more for diagonal patterns or many cuts.
  4. Enter how many tiles come in a box, from the tile dealer.

A worked example

A room 12 feet by 10 feet is 120 sq.ft. With 600 x 600 mm tiles and 10% wastage you would order about 35 tiles, or 9 boxes of 4.

Before you order

Buy all the tiles for a room from the same batch, because shade and size can vary between batches, and keep a few spare tiles for repairs.

Questions about this tool

About 10% for a straight layout in a regular room. Diagonal layouts, patterns and rooms with many corners need 15% or more.

Yes. Enter the wall width as the length and the wall height as the width, and add each wall together.

A later repair may need a tile from the same batch, and the same shade may not be available again.
