Wall material estimator
Enter the wall size to estimate bricks, cement and sand. Good for a compound wall or a partition.
Rules of thumb for planning. Actual quantities depend on brick size, joint thickness, workmanship and wastage. Ask your engineer or contractor to confirm before you order.
How this is worked out
- Standard modular bricks with 10 mm mortar joints: about 500 bricks per cubic metre of wall.
- Wet mortar about 0.25 m³ per m³ of wall; dry volume 1.27 times the wet volume.
- One bag of cement is 50 kg (0.0347 m³).
- 5% is added for wastage.
What it works out
Give the length, height and thickness of a brick wall and the estimator returns how many bricks, how many bags of cement and how much sand you should plan to order. It suits a compound wall, a boundary wall or a partition.
How to use it
- Enter the wall length and height in feet.
- Choose a half-brick (4.5 inch) or one-brick (9 inch) wall.
- Deduct doors and windows in square feet.
- Choose the mortar mix. A 1 : 6 mix is common for walls; 1 : 4 is stronger.
A worked example
A wall 10 feet long and 10 feet high, one brick (9 inches) thick, has a wall face of 100 sq.ft and needs about 1,115 bricks including 5% wastage, 3 bags of cement and 0.6 m³ of sand at a 1 : 6 mix.
Questions about this tool
It uses common rules of thumb for standard modular bricks with 10 mm mortar joints. Brick size, joint thickness and site wastage change the result, so treat it as a planning figure and confirm with your mason or contractor.
No. It covers the masonry of the wall only.
Breakage, cutting and mortar spilled on site: 5% is added to bricks and mortar.
